Butyl Di Glycol is a clear, colourless liquid with a high boiling point, low volatility and a mild, pleasant odour. Its properties are similar to butyl glycol, though it evaporates more slowly. Like other glycol ethers, it has a bi-functional nature, containing both ether and alcohol groups in the same molecule. It is fully miscible with water and a wide range of organic solvents. Butyl Benzyl Phthalate (BBP), also known as 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, butyl phenylmethyl ester, is a member of the group of chemicals known as phthalates. BBP is a colourless oily liquid and may be used as a plasticiser (which makes other substances more pliable).
Application:

• BBP is an oily liquid that belongs to a family of chemicals called phthalates, which are added to some plastics to make them flexible.
• BBP is used in various consumer products, including: Some vinyl flooring, sealants, and paints.
• Some handbags, belts, footwear and other artificial leather items that are made with polyvinyl chloride (commonly referred to as vinyl).
• California law prohibits the manufacture, sale, or distribution of children’s toys and child care articles containing BBP at levels greater than 0.1%.  US law has a similar prohibition.

An application was submitted by the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) to create a new entry for butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) in Schedule 10 of the Poisons Standard for cosmetic use, with no exemption cut-off.
BBP is classified as toxic by the European Chemical Bureau (ECB) and hence its use in Europe has declined rapidly.
