Sodium bicarbonate (IUPAC name: sodium hydrogencarbonate[9]), commonly known as baking soda or bicarbonate of soda, is a chemical compound with the formula NaHCO3. It is a salt composed of a sodium cation (Na+) and a bicarbonate anion (HCO3−). Sodium bicarbonate is a white solid that is crystalline, but often appears as a fine powder. It has a slightly salty, alkaline taste resembling that of washing soda (sodium carbonate).
Other names
Baking soda, bicarb (laboratory slang), bicarbonate of soda, nahcolite, natrium hydrogen carbonate, natron
Application:
1. Glass : the glass industry is a large consumer sector of soda ash.soda consumption per
ton of glass is 0.2T.
2. Detergent : It is used as detergent in wool rinsing, medicine and tanning.
3. Printing and dyeing : printing and dyeing industry is used as a water softener.
4. Buffer :as buffering agent, neutralize and dough improver,it can be used for pastry and noodle food, and can be used appropriately according to production needs.Soda ash is one of the most important chemical raw materials and is widely used in chemical,
glass, metallurgy, paper making, printing & dyeing, synthetic detergent, petrochemical, foodstuff, medicine & sanitation industries, etc. With a large consumption, it occupies a crucial place in national economy.
Food uses:
Sodium bicarbonate was sometimes used in cooking vegetables, to make them softer, although this has gone out of fashion, as most people now prefer firmer vegetables that contain more nutrients. However, it is still used in Asian cuisine to tenderise meats.
Baking soda may react with acids in food, including Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid). Sodium bicarbonate is also used in breadings such as for fried foods to enhance crispness.Thermal decomposition causes sodium bicarbonate alone to act as a raising agent by releasing carbon dioxide at baking temperatures.
The carbon dioxide production starts at temperatures above 80 °C. The mixture for cakes using this method can be allowed to stand before baking without any premature release of carbon dioxide.
Medical uses:
Sodium bicarbonate is used in an aqueous solution as an antacid taken orally to treat acid indigestion and heartburn.
Sodium bicarbonate may also be used in an oral form to treat chronic forms of metabolic acidosis such as chronic renal failure and renal tubular acidosis.
Sodium bicarbonate may also be useful in urinary alkalinization for the treatment of aspirin overdose and uric acid renal stones. It is used as the medicinal ingredient in gripe water for infants.
Application:
Used as food fermentation, detergent ingredient, carbondoxide foamer, pharmacy, leather, ore milling and metallurgy, detergent for wool, exting uisher and metal heat-treating, fiber and rubber industry, etc.
