Acetone or propanone is an organic compound with the formula (CH3)2CO. It is the simplest and smallest ketone. It is a colorless, highly volatile, and flammable liquid with a characteristic pungent odour. Acetone is mainly used in industry as a solvent for explosives, plastics, rubber, fibers, tanning, oil, paint, and other industries, but also as an important raw material for the synthesis of enone, acetic anhydride, iodoform, polyisoprene rubber, methyl methacrylate, chloroform, epoxy resin, and other materials. Acetone is a good solvent for many plastics and some synthetic fibers.
