Acetone or propanone is an organic compound with the formula (CH3)2CO. It is the simplest and smallest ketone. Disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, an alkaline salt, is produced in two forms. One is a clear, liquid concentrate or it is packaged as a white, odorless, powdered chemical substance that is not flammable, combustible, or explosive and has low acute oral and dermal toxicity. This salt, which is commonly confused with boric acid, is used as an insecticide and is commonly sold in liquid or powder form. It is also effective against fungi and algae. It has an unlimited shelf life and is not affected by temperature.


 "Bora-Care" is the liquid form suitable for use in a sprayer. The powdered brands are "Tim-Bor," "Borathor," "Termite Prufe" or "Board Defense" as sold in the United States, and as "Can-Bor" in Canada. This chemical is also a flame-retardant. In the liquid form, it is commonly diluted and sprayed on wood surfaces to kill termites, powder post beetles, carpenter ants, fungi and algae. It is also available as pellets for embedding in structural wood. This alkaline salt is not to be confused with boric acid (an acidic chemical) or the laundry detergent additive used for stains.

In common use as a termite control or for termite prevention, the liquid concentrate is used at a ratio of 1:1 with water. The advantages to this chemical over conventional pest control treatment is that it is non-carcinogenic and has a low toxicity to humans and pets. It is also odorless and proper application lasts for the lifetime of the wood. Repeat treatment is not necessary. It is best used during new construction, however, it is more commonly used after the fact on homes originally treated with chemicals that have become inactive.

Calcium nitrate, also called Norgessalpeter (Norwegian Salpeter), is an inorganic compound with the formula Ca(NO3)2. This colorless salt absorbs moisture from the air and is commonly found as a tetrahydrate. It is mainly used as a component in fertilizers but has other applications. Nitrocalcite is the name for a mineral that is a hydrated calcium nitrate that forms as an efflorescence where manure contacts concrete or limestone in a dry environment as in stables or caverns. A variety of related salts are known including calcium ammonium nitrate decahydrate and calcium potassium nitrate decahydrate.

Calcium nitrate is used in wastewater pre-conditioning for odor emission prevention. The wastewater pre-conditioning is based on establishing anoxic biology in the wastewater system. In the presence of nitrate, the metabolism for sulfates stops, thus preventing the formation of hydrogen sulfide. Additionally easy degradable organic matter is consumed, which otherwise can cause anaerobic conditions downstream as well as odour emissions themselves. The concept is also applicable for surplus sludge treatment.


Concrete

Calcium nitrate is used in set accelerating concrete admixtures. This use of concrete and mortar is based on two effects. The calcium ion accelerates the formation of calcium hydroxide and thus precipitation and setting. This effect is used also in cold weather concreting agents as well as some combined plasticizers. The nitrate ion leads to the formation of iron hydroxide, whose protective layer reduces corrosion of the concrete reinforcement.

Latex coagulant

Calcium nitrate is a very common coagulant in latex production, especially in dipping processes. Dissolved calcium nitrate is a part of the dipping bath solution. The warm former is dipped into the coagulation liquid and a thin film of the dipping liquid remains on the former. When now dipping the former into the latex the calcium nitrate will break up the stabilization of the latex solution and the latex will coagulate on the former.


Cold packs

The dissolution of calcium nitrate tetrahydrate is highly endothermic (cooling). For this reason, calcium nitrate tetrahydrate is sometimes used for regenerable cold packs.

Molten salts for heat transfer and storage

Calcium nitrate can be used as a part of molten salt mixtures. Typical are binary mixtures of calcium nitrate and potassium nitrate or ternary mixtures including also sodium nitrate. Those molten salts can be used to replace the oil in concentrated solar power plants for heat transfer, but mostly those are used in heat storage.

5. Character: It's a white loose fine powder, odorless, and slightly bitter. The relative density is 1.50. It has strong moisture absorption. It will be broken up into CaCO3 and acetone when heated to 160ºC. Highly soluble in water. Slightly soluble in ethanol.

6. Usage: It is used as a chelating agent, mildew-retarding agent, stabilizer, buffering agent, flavoring agent, preservatives, curing agent, nutrient supplement, PH value regulator, and processing agent.

Product Applications:

[1] It is widely used in bread to prevent rope formation thus extending the shelf life of the product.The high moisture content of bread encourages the growth of bacteria causing rope. These bacteria are heat resistant and survive at temperatures attained during the backing process. This means that in conditions conducive to rope Development, adequate measures must be taken to prevent rope formation.

[2] Calcium Acetate is an effective anti-rope agent and does not affect the fermentation process, or taste of the bread. Concentration levels of 0.2-0.5% based on the amount of flour are recommended.

[3] Calcium Acetate also finds its application in the production of resonates for printing inks.

[4] Calcium Acetate can be used to increase the milk fat production of dairy cows.
