Stearic acid is one of the main long-chain fatty acids that make up oils and fats. It exists in animal fats, oils, and some vegetable oils in the form of glycerides. Stearic acid is obtained by hydrolysis of these oils. Stearic acid is a kind of fatty acid widely existing in nature. It has the chemical properties of general carboxylic acid. Almost all oils contain stearic acid with different content. Partial evaporation is achieved, and the vapor passes through a demister before reaching the condenser section. Seawater is pumped through the condenser section to cool the vapor sufficiently to precipitate it. The distillate gathers in a tray, from where it is pumped to the storage tanks. A salinometer monitors salt content and diverts the flow of distillate from the storage tanks if the salt content exceeds the alarm limit. Sterilization is carried out after the evaporator.
Evaporators are usually of the shell-and-tube type (known as an Atlas Plant) or of the plate type (such as the type designed by Alfa Laval). Temperature, production, and vacuum are controlled by regulating the system valves. Seawater temperature can interfere with production, as can fluctuations in engine load. Dosage varies between 4 – 8 mg/ltr for ordinary water treatment. For drinking water, the dosage should always be kept at or below 9 mg/ltr (9 g/ton).
The powder product should not be dosed directly into the water system. A water solution should be made prior to dosing.
Dosing method
Potable Water Stabiliser should be dosed to a suitable point in the system. If the expansion tank is used, adequate circulation must be assured.
