It is used in water treatment as an oxygen scavenger agent and also as a metals precipitant; in chemical photography for toning black and white photographs; in the textile industry as a bleaching agent, for desulfurising and as a dechlorinating agent; and in the leather trade for the sulfitisation of tanning extracts. Being water-soluble, sodium dithionite is used as a reducing agent in some industrial dyeing processes. In the case of sulfur dyes and vat dyes, an otherwise water-insoluble dye can be reduced into a water-soluble alkali metal salt (e.g. indigo dye).
Sodium dithionite can also be used for water treatment, gas purification, cleaning, and stripping. It has also been applied as a sulfonating agent. In addition to the textile industry, this compound is used in industries concerned with leather, foods, polymers, photography, and many others, often as a decolourising agent. It is even used domestically as a decoloring agent for white laundry, when it has been accidentally stained by way of a dyed item slipping into the high temperature washing cycle. 1. Used as a solvent, a passivator for a catalyst, a pesticide intermediate and a coking inhibitor
2. Dimethyl disulfide reacts with cresol to form 2-methyl-4-hydroxybenzyl sulfide, which is then condensed with O, O-dimethylsulfuryl chloride in an alkaline medium to obtain fenthion. Fenthion is a highly effective and low-toxic organophosphorus insecticide with excellent control effects on rice aphids, soybean borers and burdock larvae.

4. It is the main raw material of methylsulfonyl chloride and methanesulfonic acid.
Application
Used as a solvent and pesticide intermediate. In the petroleum refining industry, it is widely used in the hydrodesulfurization of naphtha, gasoline, kerosene, diesel and atmospheric heavy oil, the activation of hydrotreatment and the presulfidation of hydrocracking catalysts. For pesticides, it is used to produce fenthion.
DMDS is used as a food additive in onion, garlic, cheese, meats, soups, savory flavors, and fruit flavors. Industrially, DMDS is used in oil refineries as a sulfiding agent. DMDS is also an effective soil fumigant in agriculture, registered in many states in the U.S. as well as globally. In this capacity, DMDS is an important alternative in replacing methyl bromide, which is being phased out, however less effective than the former.
Industrial use
DMDS is a stable pale yellow liquid which works as an effective product for sulfiding hydroprocessing catalysts because of its high sulfur content and low decomposition temperature. Most refineries utilize DMDS instead of other sulfur spiking agents for catalyst sulfiding because it has more sulfur per pound than dimethyl sulfide (DMS) or di-tertiary-butyl polysulfide (TBPS). Once injected to a hydrotreater or hydrocracker, DMDS decomposes to form H2S. The H2S reacts with the metal oxides on the catalyst, converting them to the active metal sulfide form.
