Ethylene carbonate is classified as the carbonate ester of ethylene glycol and carbonic acid. At room temperature (25 °C) ethylene carbonate is a transparent crystalline solid, practically odorless and colorless, and somewhat soluble in water.

Ethylene carbonate (EC) is an organic solvent with excellent performance, which can dissolve a variety of polymers; it can also be used as an organic intermediate to replace ethylene oxide for dioxylation, and is the main raw material for the production of dimethyl carbonate by transesterification; it can also be used as a raw material for the synthesis of furazolidone, sodium silicate slurry, fiber finishing agent, etc.; in addition, it is also used in lithium battery electrolyte Medium. Applications

Ethylene carbonate is used as a polar solvent with a molecular dipole moment of 4.9 D only 0.1 D lower than that of propylene carbonate.

Other components like diethyl carbonate, ethyl methyl carbonate, dimethyl carbonate, and methyl acetate can be added to those electrolytes in order to decrease the viscosity and melting point.
