Isopropyl alcohol (IUPAC name propan-2-ol and also called isopropanol or 2-propanol) is a colorless, flammable chemical compound (chemical formula CH3CHOHCH3) with a strong odor. As an isopropyl group linked to a hydroxyl group, it is the simplest example of a secondary alcohol, where the alcohol carbon atom is attached to two other carbon atoms. It is a structural isomer of 1-propanol and ethyl methyl ether.
Isopropyl alcohol is a colorless and transparent liquid with a smell similar to the mixture of ethanol and acetone. It can be miscible with alcohol, ether, chloroform and water. It can dissolve alkaloids, rubber, shellac, rosin, synthetic resin and other organic and some inorganic substances. It forms an azeotrope with water and is insoluble in salt solution. It can ignite and burn at room temperature,and its steam is easy to form explosive mixture when mixed with air.
It is used in the manufacture of a wide variety of industrial and household chemicals and is a common ingredient in chemicals such as antiseptics, disinfectants, and detergents.

1.Isopropyl alcohol is widely used as organic raw material and solvent. As chemical raw materials, Isopropyl alcohol can produce acetone, hydrogen peroxide, methyl isobutyl ketone, diisobutyl
ketone, isopropylamine, isopropyl ether, isopropyl chloride, isopropyl fatty acid and chlorinated isopropyl fatty acid. In fine chemicals, Isopropyl alcohol can be used to produce isopropyl nitrate,
isopropyl xanthate, triisopropyl phosphite, aluminum isopropoxide, medicine and pesticides, as well as diisopropyl acetone, isopropyl acetate, thymol and gasoline additives.
2. As a solvent, isopropyl alcohol is a relatively cheap solvent in industry. It has a wide range of uses. It can freely mix with water. It has stronger solubility for lipophilic substances than ethanol.
